Positioned on the historic waterfront of Calabar, this arts centre was conceived as a living archive of Cross River cultural heritage. The building’s envelope — a lattice of ceramic brise-soleil panels encoding traditional Efik textile patterns — mediates between interior gallery climate and the humid coastal exterior. Inside, permanent and temporary galleries are arranged around a planted internal courtyard that doubles as a performance and events space, drawing the public into the life of the building every week of the year.

Key Features

  • 3,200m² ceramic brise-soleil facade encoding traditional Efik textile woven patterns

  • Three gallery halls totalling 2,800m² with track lighting and moveable partition walls

  • Planted internal courtyard configured as a 400-person outdoor performance and events space

  • Permanent Cross River State heritage collection with dedicated archive storage

  • River-facing public café and terrace open to the Calabar waterfront daily
